Scenes From The Weekend + Hot Weather Running Tips

As promised, I’m back today to talk a bit about my weekend in Arkansas. For those of you who don’t know, Rob’s sister lives there with her husband (they’re both named Shannon!) and they just had a baby in April. This was our first time getting to visit them since the baby’s been born so we were so excited to finally meet her! Here’s a quick recap of the weekend, mostly in pictures:

planeCoffee and some blogging before our first flight took off, and some drinks later in the day on our flight from Atlanta to Fayetteville.

walmart museumWe had lunch in Bentonville and then explored the Walmart museum. There was also a street fair in the square so we walked around there for a bit.

We spent the rest of the weekend relaxing at the house, had a few beers/wine and played some corn hole…godparentsAnd of course we got to spend lots of time with baby Finley, and the Shannons even asked us to be her Godparents! We were so honored!

As I mentioned yesterday, we got to run on a trail that was pretty close to where we were staying. However, we got out later than we should have which meant the sun was already strong and it was HOT. (There were some shaded spots, but not many.) We also weren’t well hydrated from traveling the day before, and didn’t bring any water with us on our run. We made so many rookie mistakes! The week before had been much cooler in Baltimore (50-60 degrees), which made running in 80 degree temps feel extra difficult!

running in the heat

When I read that the topic for “Tuesdays On The Run” this week was hot weather running, I thought I would share some links that may help you to make some smarter choices than we did this weekend.

This week is going to be in the 90s here in Maryland, so I guess it’s time for me to take some of this advice and prepare for the heat!

Tuesdays on the Run

Thanks to April, Patty, and Erica for hosting the link-up!

Have you had to run in the heat yet this season?

Any tips for surviving the hot weather?

  1. Ha ha! The timing of this is perfect. Andrew and I went for a 10 miler in the heat on Saturday and even though I drank lots of water after, it seemed that the post run beers combined with too much sun was just too much for this old girl and I ended up throwing up on date night. :( So sad. Finley’s so cute! Congratulations on both your auntie status and being her Godparents!

    • Oh no! I had to drink so much water after my runs in the heat; it can definitely take a toll.

  2. Awesome and congrats – the baby is beautiful and you guys look like you had a great time! :)

The ‘baby’ from all of our siblings turned 17 in March (2 weeks after our younger son) … so those days seem long behind us!

Since Lisa started her new job in April and has a regular schedule I have lengthened my morning runs and skipped any weekend runs (still keeping to 50+ mile weeks), so I haven’t had extreme heat, but mornings of 70 degrees have come up a couple of times. For me it is all about skin protection, proper dress, sunglasses, sunscreen and hydration!

    • Thank you:)
It definitely helps to get out earlier in the morning. I think thats why being out at 9am was such a shock for me, I’m usually done with my run by 6:30am. Your list is spot on!

    • Exactly. I feel like I just do what I can- its more about surviving the heat by hydrating and dressing properly or trying to avoid it by running early or in the shade.

  3. Aw thanks for including my link! Adjusting to the heat and humidity definitely takes a little time. I feel like I am totally getting there but that’s because we keep getting cooler days thrown in. I heard 90 for Thursday so I am pretty sure the warm weather may be here soon to stay! I have been running a little earlier which definitely helps a ton.

    • I think its been harder for me to adjust this year because we have had those cooler weeks thrown in. I’m also just not used to running in the sun, I think that makes it a million times worse.

    • Thanks! So its in the place where the first Walmart store was, and they have items that were sold there during different time periods. The picture I shared was a shop in the front of the museum that sold old candy and stuff like that.

    • Its funny because sometimes I forget that the treadmill is an option but you are totally right! Sometimes its just not worth running outside when its super hot.
Thank you! We are very excited:)

  4. It has been mostly humidity for me – not straight heat. It definitely takes my body about 2-3 weeks to even adjust to those types of temperatures. I always try to run early early early in the morning before anything warms up haha. If I have to run later in the morning or afterwork I’ll always bring a water bottle with me and run in light colored clothing. Makes it at least a little bit more manageable! Happy Tuesday : )

    • I think I was more used to the humidity because thats what we have here in Maryland, and I usually avoid running later in the morning when the sun is up and the temps are higher. So those factors definitely made things worse!

    • Thanks!
The Walmart museum had items that used to be sold in walmart during different time periods. And it was in the location of the first Walmart store so that was kind of fun to see!

    • Yep, even on my days off I get up and out early to avoid the heat! I definitely learned my lesson with that this weekend:)

    • Thank you!
55-60 in the morning sounds pretty great! Around here we have hit 70 in the morning but its really the humidity that makes it tough. And I definitely learned my lesson last weekend and will not be going out after the sun is up anymore!

  5. I throw in the towel and stay inside. Saturday I ran inside and it was so humid outside, it felt stuffy in the gym, even when I had the treadmill fan going at full power. It’s just a fact of summer running, and I showered before icing. I don’t normally take cold showers but those are refreshing in the summer.

    • My cold shower after Saturdays run felt SO good, and I usually don’t like cold showers either!

    • Sounds like fun! I would rather run in the summer than the winter too- Im glad we don’t have to deal with lots of layers anymore!

    • Thank you! It was a museum with items that were sold in Walmart stores during different time periods. And it was in the location of the first walmart store. It was fun to see!

  6. Awwwww congratulations on being Godparents!!! That is the sweetest little note I’ve ever seen. :) It looks like you had a great weekend and I am definitely in need of a warm weather running refresher. It’s getting HOT out there!

    • Thank you! And yes, it sure is getting hot this week! Time to adjust again because Im sure it will be like this for awhile!

  7. Aww, your niece is so cute, congratulations on being named Godparents :) I made some not so good decisions in regards to the heat last week too, even though I should know better too haha. I went shopping all day Saturday and the only water I had was when I took my calcium and iron supplements, so Sunday’s run was not so fun. I guess coffee and iced tea aren’t the best sources of hydration 😉

    • Thanks! Sounds like we both learned our lessons with running in the heat this weekend:)

    • Thank you! That is smart to carry water…I should probably start doing that again!

    • Haha I guess its to showcase all the stuff that Walmart sold in different time periods. Not sure if it really needs a museum, but its in the place where the original Walmart was built.

    • I have said the same thing and then I usually do regret it:) But most of the time I don’t mind the heat…it’s just the exceptionally hot days that I find terrible especially when I’m doing a long run.

  8. Aw, little Finley is adorable!! I’m sure you will both make great godparents :) I have a goddaughter and she’s 4 years old already! Time goes by so fast.
The heat and humidity have been getting ridiculous lately. Normally I don’t need water for a short run up to 6-7 miles or so but now I need water if I’m going over 3 miles!
