Route 66 Marathon Training Week 6

This was the first week I really felt like I was “marathon training”. I was tired from a race the previous weekend, had some harder workouts on the schedule, and bumped up my long run to 15 miles.

If you read my recap from last week, you’d see that I ran a 12 mile race on Saturday and an easy 5 miles on Sunday. This meant I was moving into this week already having semi-tired legs without my usual Sunday rest day. (The races have caused my schedule to be a little different lately). However, I still had a solid week although I was more than ready for a rest day Thursday!

Monday: 5 miles easy, hip and core exercises

Tuesday: 7 miles with 5x800s. It was a dark morning at the track, but I wore my headlight and my splits were spot on.

Wednesday: AM: 5 miles easy, PM: Strength workout with hip and core exercises

Thursday: Rest day (with some hip/core exercises)

Friday: 6 miles with 4 at MGP

Saturday: 15 miles with lots of hills!

I ran a route that took me back to Druid Hills, where I got to experience the hills from my race 2 weeks ago once again.

Then I spent the rest of the day in compression tights and socks.

Sunday: Rest day

Total: 38 miles

It was a good week, and I think it will be helpful to settle into a routine without any more races for a while. Part of me liked the weekday rest days, but I also really enjoy Sunday rest days after a long run! 

This was also an interesting week with the weather. It was cooler earlier in the week, then the heat and humidity came back, but by the end of the week it cooled off again and Saturday was rainy. Hopefully the weather will continue to improve over the next few weeks!

  1. It has definitely cooled down where I am – for now at least. I heard this coming week is going to be a hot one again!! But am I ever enjoying the gorgeous cool weather while its here.
    I am pretty adamant about Sunday rest days. There’s just something about Sunday that screams rest.

  2. I had a few good runs last week. I am definitely seeing progress. The weather in Memphis cooled down over the weekend, but is expected to go back up. Running is not something that is easy for me. I really have to work for it. I have been running more hills lately as well. Have a great day

  3. Lisa, we definitely had a nice break in the weather over the weekend; I was able to start my 12-miler in a temperature of 61 degrees, and that was quite a treat! I think it’ll all be over by Wednesday, though, which is kind of a bummer; we’ll be back to lows in the 70s and highs around 90 – ugh. You had a great training week!! Way to go!! Hope your Monday is off to a good start!

  4. Last week’s humidity was awful! This week is looking amazing…but now I kinda don’t remember how to dress for cool temps. LOL. Last week was a step back week for me in my training, so I took it easy after the Chuck 12. This week I’m back on track and ready to get through the next two tough weeks before taper. Good for you for voluntarily going back to Druid Hill Park. You must be a glutton for punishment. :)

  5. I think my favourite part of this blogging thing has been watching you come back from injury and just seeing your training go up and up with your mileage, your races, etc. It’s pretty inspiring! You’re so dedicated, especially with the track work (head lamp, so early in the morning, etc). You’re incredible.

  6. Great week of training for you! I’m actually looking forward to this week being my first official marathon training week. I do love my rest days on a Friday! Sundays are normally rest days for me too but I’ll usually end up taking an active rest, even if it’s only walking. I love pulling on a pair of compression socks after a hard race or training run too! I love your hot pink ones!
