A Look Back at April 2015

Can anyone else believe it is May already? April really flew by for me with so much going on! I am excited to finally be moving into the warmer months, and there are lots of fun things coming for the rest of the spring and summer! For now, it’s time to pause and look back at how April went.

2015 goals

-If you have read any of my other recaps or been following my blog for a bit you may already know that I am not on track for many of my goals. But that is ok; I have shifted my priorities for now and those goals can be reached one day, just maybe not this year.

-I am continuing to work on getting stronger and healthier. Between PT and an FMS screening through my chiropractor, my weak areas have really been brought to light.

I’m also running up hills now!

-I don’t think I planked 5 days a week in April- maybe just during the first few weeks. However, I still do them 2-3 days a week and I am doing other core work other days throughout the week. It’s good to change things up!

-This month I read “Running Strong” by Jordon Metzl and started incorporating his Iron Strength workout into my weekly routine when I can. It’s really nice that I can do burpees, squat jumps, etc. now without worrying about upsetting the downstairs neighbors!

-I kept up with swimming even once I started running again, but after I moved it hasn’t been happening. I am still figuring out the gym situation. Also, Rob and I share a car and drive in to work together so I need to be mindful of his schedule. swimming

April 2015 Stats and Highlights

Total miles: 47- still much lower than usual for me, but a nice improvement from the 16 I did in March.

Best run: This one.

Favorite non-running activity: I have been really enjoying taking Body Pump and CX WORX classes lately. I can really feel my glutes working from those types of workouts!

Most popular blog posts: Since I cut back quite a bit on blogging this month, I am only going to share the top 3:

Scenes From the Weekend

Adjusting, Adapting, Accepting

Biggest Accomplishment: Getting discharged from PT maybe? Even though I wasn’t 100%, I was still told to go ahead and start building up my mileage slowly again. However, I am still working closely with a chiropractor.

Set-backs and struggles: I spoke about this a few weeks ago, but the transition to living in my new house was a bit challenging. Not necessarily in a bad way, but it was definitely a struggle and took some adjusting.

Things I’m looking forward to in May: My friend’s bachelorette party weekend (wine tasting!!), enjoying some relaxation at our new house, and hopefully spending alot of time out in the sunshine and warmer weather!

  1. April really did fly by. I can’t even pinpoint what exactly was stressful about it except that it felt non stop! My goal for May is to sleep better, although may looks to be an even busier month so far.

Looks like May will be fun for you! Being more settled in the house will be nice now that you get to really enjoy the spring :)

    • I feel like every weekend was just jam-packed in April! The spring will continue to be busy but hopefully in a good way:)

    • I am definitely excited for the school year to be over, and yay for warm beach days!! And I feel like June is such a popular birthday month!

    • You should! It had practical advice and suggestions, and its a quick read that’s easy to follow.

  2. April really just flew by! The best part of April for me was my half marathon, even though I didn’t reach my goal I still PRed.
Sounds like you have a really fun month ahead! My goal for May is just to have the move go smoothly and transition well. I start marathon training in June and want to keep up decent mileage leading up to that.

    • I think that your May will be like my April! Hopefully the move will go smoothly! And marathon training is very exciting:)

  3. I have to agree with everyone else here and say that April truly did fly by. I was trying to think of my favorite thing from April, and I kept thinking of things from February or March…April zipped right by. I am looking forward to spending more time outside in May, and being done with classes so I can focus on research, but also get some much needed free time. :)

    • I know, its a little hard to even remember what happened last month! May is such a great month for being outside!

  4. April went by FAR too quickly! I ran Boston which was such an incredible experience, but I feel so sad that it’s over already! I can’t wait for the warmer weather in May and for Memorial Day weekend! BBQ on the beach! :)

    • That’s awesome that you got to run Boston! I would imagine that it was be disappointing when its over already. But there are lots of fun things to look forward to for the rest of the spring!

  5. I need to check out that book. I also need to incorporate some glute strengthening exercises but I’m so nervous about jamming up my SI joint that I’m scared to do anything new! Does he talk about SI joint stuff in there?

    • I don’t think specifically, but I really can’t really remember. I think that most glute exercises would be safe for you, as long as your not jumping around or anything. Have you tried bridges? Those are usually the most basic exercise they recommend.

      • I haven’t tried bridges, no. I have never done anything except run, really. I’ve only recently incorporated core work, and I really notice a difference. I used to be skeptical of anything that wasn’t running, but now I’m converted. I neeeeeed some strength training to keep injuries at bay.

  6. I honestly cannot believe it’s already May. I feel like it was just New Years and freezing cold weather! Transitions are tough but pretty soon you’ll feel settled and I’m so glad running is starting to go well for you again!

    • I am just SO glad that the winter is over! Its been making me so happy to be able to be outside in the warmer weather!

  7. I am in complete denial that it’s May already.
Aren’t county hills FUN!? When I first started running I hated them and now I can’t imagine it any other way.

I love Body Pump so much too, but my schedule is so wonky right now that it’s tough to get to class. Definitely the best glute workout though!

    • Oh these hills are going to take some getting used to! But I know they are good for me. And I just can’t get the same effect from doing squats and lunges on my own that I get from doing them in Body Pump!

    • Yes, I need to get back to doing barre workouts regularly! I think that will be a great supplement for when I can’t get to the other classes that I like.

    • A Florida trip sounds great! I am sure it will be really hot there! I remember going in May last year and running was not pleasant:) Everything else was wonderful though, plus seeing family is always a good time!

  8. I cannot even believe that we are heading towards the halfway point of the year! Crazy! I’m so glad to see you heading towards the right direction in running healthy. You have been such a great example to all of us in listening and learning to take care of ourselves when it comes to running healthy, even though I know that was probably really hard sometimes. I’m excited for my first race since December this month!

    • I didnt even realize how close we are to the halfway point of the year until you said that! Wow! Good luck in your race this month, I can’t wait to hear how it goes!

  9. I’m so impressed with your self-restraint on getting back into running. You truly have a good head on your shoulders, which is so necessary considering your running goals in 2015 are so HUGE! Sub 1:40 half? Good lord speed demon!

Thanks for sharing your highs and lows. And keep it up with the planks. I need to work on core strength too!
Lauren @ ihadabiglunch recently posted…Leave Your Ego BehindMy Profile

    • I think the sub 1:40 will take awhile….I was getting closer to those paces last fall but I haven’t done any faster running in months!

    • The spring is such a busy time of year! And the tri was a huge accomplishment for you in April!

  10. I’m really missing Body Pump. I’ve got to find a way to fit it in, maybe after work instead of 6AM.

My favorite thing in April? Finishing up training and finally seeing warm weather. Looking forward to in May? Just less stress with “training” for something. I’m going to try and get some more cross training in too!

    • I need to find a new gym closer to home and then figure out a way to make it to those classes a few times a week! You definitely deserve a break from training this month!

  11. I really need to find that Iron Strength workout! It sounds like a big deal and that’s an area I need some work on. I’m amazed at all the work you’ve put in to fix all the little things that affect your running. I’m sure it will pay off for you real soon :)

April really did fly fast, but May should be fun. One of my younger sisters is graduating college and Bill Nye the Science Guy is speaking at her commencement. I cannot wait for that!

    • That graduation sounds like fun! And you should definitely try the iron strength workout, it is tough but I think that doing it regularly will pay off!

  12. I too feel like time is flying by! Sounds like you’ve been keeping busy, and also have some fun things coming up!
Best part of April for me was getting our pup!, and looking forward to traveling to Paris this month!
